Soft Tissue Grafting
In areas with very thin gum a graft is needed to prevent recession from occurring and also when we have a strong pull from the tissue fibers from the inner mucosa of the cheeks or floor of the mouth.
There are two types of gum tissue next to our teeth:
The attached band that is in contact with the teeth is a firm, non-mobile band, which resist normal daily forces of brushing, flossing and chewing. This band of tissue is firmly attached to the bone surrounding our teeth. Below the attached gum there is the mucosa; a mobile, highly vascularized and darker pink tissue which is not meant to resist the forces of daily brushing, flossing and chewing but instead is in charge of providing vascularity to the attached gum. With its elastic fibers it permits facial expressions and speech.
When we don’t have the skin tissue like band around our teeth but we are left with a thin, see-through mobile tissue/mucosa. Forces that are normal can be very traumatizing to the gum therefore leading to inflammation and recession.
A gum graft allows us to create or improve the quality and quantity of tissue needed for normal function (brushing, flossing and chewing). When coverage of the roots is needed a root coverage procedure is indicated.

From the moment I came in to the office I felt very comfortable and welcomed. Big thanks to Dr. Sylvia La Rosa and her wonderful assistants for their performance on my gum tissue. It was also easy to follow up with all the after surgery steps by using their verbal and written instructions. Just feels like I got to the right place and got super professional help. Thank you all!

Had at least four grafts over two years. Awesome staff and Dr. Sylvia La Rosa is fantastic! Their pain management is the best I’ve ever encountered and I’ve had 3 dentists praise the grafting work that was done.

I WAS SCARED WHEN I FOUND OUT I HAD TO HAVE A GUM GRAFT. MY STOMACH WAS IN KNOTS FOR DAYS LEADING UP TO MY APPOINTMENT BUT WHEN I WALKED IN THAT DAY THEY MADE ME FEEL CARED FOR AND EASED MY TENSION. BY FAR THE BEST MEDICAL CARE AND EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD. I DON’T EVEN REMEMBER THE RECOVERY ALL THAT MUCH, I JUST REMEMBER THE WONDER TREATMENT AND FOLLOW UP I RECIEVED FROM DR. LA ROSA AND HER STAFF.
